Twitter released the top-trending topics and tweets for 2016 (so far), and Hollywood and politics were both prominently in the digital zeitgeist for the social-media’s 300-plus million global user base.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” registered as the top TV show of the year, and #GameofThrones also was one of the top-trending topics overall on Twitter, coming in at No. 10. The Rio Summer Olympic Games came in at No. 1 and the 2016 U.S. election was second. Disney/Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars” juggernaut captured the No. 1 spot in the movie category, benefiting from the late-2015 release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and this month’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
And while President-elect Donald Trump certainly soaked up a lot of the twittersphere’s oxygen (“Trump” was the No. 8 globally trending topic), it was Hillary Clinton who had one of the most-retweeted posts of 2016.

Clinton’s post-election tweet was the third most-retweeted for 2016. No. 1 was from Spanish YouTube star and gamer “El Rubius” (Rubén Doblas Gundersen), whose “limonada” tweet has been shared 1.38 million times after he promised prizes to fans who retweeted it. Coming in second was Brit popster Harry Styles of One Direction, who tweeted on his birthday, “I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling 22.”

The biggest retweets in entertainment for 2016 according to Twitter belonged to Leonardo DiCaprio after his Academy Award win for “The Revenant,” setting a record for most retweets per minute of any Oscars; Kim Kardashian West’s post about National Snake Day; and Seth Rogen’s “Trifecta of smoking power” with Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa.
